Carving the Self: Id | Ego | Superego is a solo exhibition by Abu Al Naeem that explores the layered structure of the human psyche through the medium of woodcut printmaking. Drawing from Sigmund Freud’s psychological model, the exhibition traces a journey through instinct, consciousness, and moral reflection, translating the intangible inner world into tactile, visual form.

Rather than presenting resolved narratives, the works function as a process of excavation. Each print emerges from a deeply physical and emotional engagement with material, where carving becomes both an artistic and psychological act. The raw, impulsive energy of the Id is expressed through chaotic textures and spontaneous mark-making. The Ego appears in the disciplined negotiation between idea and material during the carving process. The Superego is revealed in the final printed image, measured, reflective, and open to the viewer’s interpretation.

Using a multi-layered suicidal woodcut technique, where each stage of carving permanently erases the previous, the works embody transformation, loss, and becoming. The process itself mirrors the evolution of the self, from unconscious impulse to conscious decision, and finally to introspective awareness.

The exhibition brings together a series of prints that explore themes of identity, tension, vulnerability, and resilience.
